Well with the first budget of the new coalition Government over (the so called Emergency Budget that the Conservatives promised and delivered within 50 days), lets look at the results.

The one that appears to be the top talking point is VAT so lets start with that. VAT will be rising from 17.5% up to 20% from the 4th of January next year. It was widely expected before the budget and the Conservatives never ruled it out in the run up to the election saying they have not seen the books yet so can't yet say either way. As pointed out by a few people on Twitter, though, everybody was saying when VAT was reduced to 15%, it would not make any difference yet suddently, a rise by the same amount does make a difference.

Something good for low earners is the personal allowance (the amount we can earn before we get taxed) rise. Liberal Democrat policy is to get this up to £10,000 and apparently that is the coalition's eventual aim but for now, it is rising by £1,000 meaning you can earn £7,475 before you have to pay any tax.

Today we get to know details of everyone who earns more than the Prime Minister thanks to the policies of both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats pushing for more Government transparency. Personally, considering the PM gets paid £142,500, I think it should be set at £100,000 but maybe that will change over time.

One thing anyone earning over this amount had to do was go and see the Chancellor to justify their pay packet. From what the news has been reporting, he was expecting possibly 75-100 people maximum. What he actually got was a queue at his door longer than the one outside Apple's flagship London store for the new iPad on Friday it has been revealed - 172 people to be precise.

Top of the list is John Fingleton, chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading taking a massive £279,999 pay packet home despite launching as many investigations as they do, specifically into larger firms, without leading to any action.
